Another Chance to Shine ? Following Up on the Interview

 by: Heather Eagar

The interview follow up letter can make or break your chances of becoming hired.
For that reason it should become an essential part of your job hunting tool box, right in there with the other tools you use: resume, cover letter, thank you note, reference sheet and salary history.

Think of the letter as a second chance.
Some people don?t interview in person as well as they can write.
Living up to the standards your resume set for you may be difficult.
If that is the case, then the interview follow up letter will improve your appearance after the fact.
Other people interview well in person, and are able to use this letter to reemphasize key points discussed with the hiring manager, and remind the hiring manager of the good points about the applicant.
In either case the interview follow up letter is essential and if prepared properly will help the applicant get the job.

The following sample interview follow up letter gives an idea of what should be included.

The time I spent interviewing with you today gave me a clear picture of your organization?s operation as well as your work environment.
I want to thank you for the thorough picture you painted of your organizational needs.

I left our meeting feeling very enthusiastic about the scope of the position as well as its close match to my abilities. I believe the key strengths that I can offer you are:

? Experience in dealing with people of all types and backgrounds through my life experience, education and training.

? Proven ability to operate a business at a profit, supervise and train personnel,
facilitate activities to improve morale and cash flow,
and interact successfully with both staff and customers.

? Excellent communication skills?particularly the ability to gain feedback and summarize succinctly.

With my energetic work style, strong people skills and attention to detail, I believe that I am an excellent match for this position.
I welcome a chance to meet with you
further to elaborate on my background and possibilities of future association.

Thank you for your time.
I look forward to meeting with you soon.

Sincerely,

John Doe

You?ll notice that it is written in a positive and upbeat style.
In sales, many successful salesmen assume the close.
This does essentially that. The applicant in writing this letter is controlling the conversation and steering it towards positive attributes that he or she possesses, which would make the applicant appear valuable to the company.
In addition, by using an interview follow up letter an applicant is ?walking the walk as well as talking the talk? simply because most applicants fail to use an interview follow up letter after an interview.
Using a letter like this shows that the applicant is conscientious, thoughtful, intelligent, and just the kind of person the company needs.
Using an interview follow up letter will lead to more job offers and more jobs.

Special Cover Letter Considerations for Teachers

 by: Heather Eagar

Cover letters for teachers need to emphasize qualifications as well as attitude.
Education professionals need to come into the field with an attitude of service coupled with a commitment to excellence and a desire to work closely with students.
It should reflect all of these points, as should resumes for teachers, and any other self marketing materials used by education professionals.

When writing one for teachers most professional resume writers and job counselors take into consideration the specific needs of the school or school system being applied to.
Cover letters for teachers are read by the school superintendent, principal, HR director and other education professionals.
Additionally in some school systems cover letters for teachers are read by members of the school board.

Sending Samples With Your Press Release-- Should You Or Shouldn't You? Here's A Guide?

 by: Dianne Beiermann

When you begin to send out your press releases, you will start to get calls and emails from the editors requesting samples of your product. What do you do? Well that all depends. Below are some tricks and tips for gauging when you should or shouldn't send samples.

When you should send samples with your press release:

1) When the item is very low cost: If the press release you're sending is about a product that is under $10.00, you may want to consider sending a sample of the product to the editors. Since the item is low cost, it makes sense to send a sample. Sending a sample can help improve your chances for getting some free publicity for your company.

2) When it is a major publication: Another good time to consider sending a product sample is when you're dealing with a major publication. If the publication has a wide distribution...

Understanding Resume Styles

Understanding Resume Styles

 by: David Green

Perfecting the perfect resume style can be tricky.
Many job seekers don't really understand the ins and outs of resume creation and only think about their resumes when they are actively seeking other employment.
Many recruiters agree that such an approach can actually leave your resume lacking in both style and content.

Living Resume Style

Do you have a living or non-living resume?
A living resume style is a document that is continually updated over the course of months or years.
It isn't simply updated when you are looking for a job.
So if your employer gives you a new task or you learn a new skill, you would update your resume to reflect that. This resume style is ideal for a number of reasons.

First, it lets you get a clearer picture of where you may be headed in your career.
You may begin to notice patterns and...

No Clips? No Problem!

No Clips? No Problem!

 by: Brandi Rhoades

Writers who have no clips often believe that they cannot get work. That leads them to accepting underpaid and unappreciated jobs that in the end will not put them in a better position to land better gigs. If you are in that position, you have options! Don?t settle for jobs that aren?t worth your time. Instead work on making yourself more marketable.

1) Find the right markets.

Locate a couple of markets that work with new writers. You can find them by searching online using ?welcomes new writers? or ?new or experienced writers? and similar phrases. You will come up with magazines and e-zines that will be happy to give an opportunity to someone without any publishing credits. Start by studying these publications. See what they want and then work up a good query for them.

2) Write on spec.

?On spec? is writer-speak for ?on speculation.? You write the full article and send it to a market...
